  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from C Johnson -- A Very Rewarding Book to Read! : I met Kathryn 30 yrs ago when we worked at the same Pharma company. I noticed that everything Kathryn put her mind to she excelled at, and this book was no different. She does not disappoint. It’s a beautifully written memoir of her struggles and how she was able to overcome them. This book brings to light a condition that is not commonly recognized and how it impacts the people closest to them. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 26, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Laura T. -- Such a great book! Definitely a must read!! : I admire Kathryn's strength and courage to share the story of her family's journey! No one has a perfect family and we can all learn from this incredible memoir about life, resilience and healing. This beautifully written book offers hope and inspiration for anyone who has ever experienced family or personal struggles...or simply knows someone who has any amount of family dysfunction. The path to self-healing may be different for everyone but Kathryn's book is testimony that we can all get there!! • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jane -- Such a well written, enjoyable & easy to read story about a tough subject! : So glad I read this book!! The author’s retelling of her life story & the emotional (and sometimes physical) abuse she experienced allows readers who have experienced similar abuse to know they are not alone in their own experiences - so important for victims of abuse! This story is so well-written, filled with so many interesting & sometimes funny anecdotes with historical details that it is any easy read and not a depressing one. Anyone would enjoy this book. Highly recommend!! ( Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Heather P -- Very well-written and hard to put down : I could barely put this book down when I started reading it. Kathryn's story was so well-written, and I really enjoyed "watching" her heal with each page I read. Even though my family didn't have the same challenges as the Edwards family, I believe each family has some sort of dysfunction to overcome. Kathryn's survival and overcoming her upbringing will shine hope for you as you enjoy reading about her journey. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 16, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Samuel Tooma, A retired naval oceanographer for 36 years. -- An eye opening insight to the affects of narcissism on family members : Kathryn Purcell’s first hand account of her struggle of dealing with the abuse she had to endure from her narcississtic biological mother is something to behold. Deprived of her need for acceptance by her mother plagued her throughout her formative childhood and young adult years. She was saddled with feelings of unworthiness and insecurity and was not allowed to develop needed peer friendships, so necessary in the early years. How she coped with and overcame these problems is presented clearly in this wonderful, well-written book, “There Is Something Wrong With Us”. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from ToniB -- The impact of mental illness on a family : One out of four adults in the U.S. qualifies as having a diagnosable mental disorder and with recent public figures talking about their struggles this is an important and topical book. With vivid and engrossing detail, the author relates her own experiences living in an outwardly normal family that was anything but. It is a poignant story told with empathy and humor Ultimately she triumphs over the childhood adversity she suffered to live a happy, fulfilling life but one with residual emotional scars. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Karen Von waldner -- A joy to read! : Instead of burying her feelings, Kathryn Purcell was brave to share her pain and experiences in her childhood, for others to find healing. This book brings a light on how a person can deal and handle a loveless life. She shows how not to be trapped and feel damaged but to rise and fine the positives in life. This book will give comfort to anyone dealing with heartache of not feeling accepted in their family. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 27, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Joe R. -- A Memoir I'll Remember for a LONG time! : Kathryn Purcell's memoir was a great two day read! I loved it—not just because how thoroughly she covered the events and characters that infiltrated her life, but how delightful it was to stumble into the life lessons contained within the story of her life. Kathryn has an amazing talent for capturing details that brings her readers right to the front door of her struggles, and then once inside, we are right there, experiencing everything with her. Easy to recommend. JR ( Reviewed in the United States on September 30, 2021 )
